Letthe Rough Side Drag Jesse Winchester
Price $ 18.52
A Montrealer, originally born in the south, was influenced by Rock and Roll, R&B, folk,
country, bluegrass and soul which makes for an amazing amalgamation of the
aforementioned that can be heard through his melodious yet simple masterpieces. Jesse Winchester
has never failed to please my ears, and this album was not an exception. He must be heard
to be believed. His songs have been done by Emmylou Harris, Wynona Judd, The Everly
Brothers, The Mavericks and many many more; a true testament to the beauty of his songs
and to his skill.

Live from Mountain Stage Jesse Winchester
Price $ 14.23
This modest live album offers a rare glimpse of a truly great Southern singer-songwriter, but it
may frustrate fans as much as it intrigues listeners unfamiliar with his work. At his best, Jesse
Winchester weaves gospel, folk, blues, and country threads into graceful, intelligent music
that reflects his origins in Louisiana, rural Mississippi, and Memphis. He sings in a honeyed
drawl about affairs of the heart, small moments of deep feeling, and mysteries of the spirit
with a rare balance of clarity and gravity. This set captures Winchester accompanied only by
his spare gut-string acoustic guitar, a setting that emphasizes song craft but eclipses his skill
at solid ensemble arrangements. The repertoire favors Winchester's more recent output
while overlooking or underselling his earlier songs, thus reducing exquisite signatures like
"Brand-New Tennessee Waltz" and "Yankee Lady" to pale echoes of their original power
and depicting their author as a folk poet instead of the versatile musician his past albums
and infrequent tours have revealed. --Sam Sutherland

Nothing But a Breeze Jesse Winchester
Price $ 14.49
Reviewer: kjunonefrom Williamsburg, Virginia:
This is a sentimental favorite of mine. Jesse Winchester sings with the best on this album: Nicolette Larson
and Emmylou Harris. Both compliment him beautifully. Some of the songs will break your heart
and others will make you smile. My personal favorite is the one sung in French.

The Best of Jesse Winchester Jesse Winchester
Price $ 14.99
Reviewer: David L. Kinney from San Francisco, Ca. United States:
Okay folk/country/rock fans, let's try a blindfold test on our friends. Play them "Tell Me Why
You Like Roosevelt", and have them guess who the singer is. Most of my victims guess Lyle
Lovett, and they don't believe they're wrong until I show them this CD. That only goes to prove
that Lyle Lovett had discerning taste when he was younger and that Tennessee born Jesse
Winchester was a highly influential presence in the wings of the 70's music scene. He's most
familiar to listeners via the many cover versions of his songs like 'Biloxi', Rhumba Man',and
'Brand New Tennessee Waltz"'all done while he was enjoying Canadian hospitality as a
result of a disagreement with the draft board in the late 60's and early 70's.
The inability to
tour the U.S. during this period cost him many potential fans and helps to explain his near
anonymity today. This CD is a great way to catch up with this gifted singer songwriter. Any
transplanted southerner can easily become homesick hearing "Mississippi You're On My
Mind', or "Yankee Lady", I know I'm prone to fits of melancholia listening to them. But he's
witty, and not without a sense of down home humor too, so the total package works out fine. If
you like this sampler then you'll want to go into his available back catalogue for more hidden
delights. He's touring again too and puts on a great live show. Just ask Lyle Lovett next time
you see him.

Third Down, 110 to Go Jesse Winchester
Price $ 18.52
Reviewer: donna from Mesa, AZ:
"Do La Lay," Jesse Winchester's ode to his first born child is my favorite on this album/CD. I say
album, because I first heard the song in the early 1970s. My boyfriend at the time was a big
fan of Jesse's and we listened to his music constantly. After the passage of
twenty-seven years, all I could remember of the song was Jesse's moving lyrics:"oh little child
of love, I won't stand in your way" and his unforgettable voice in my head, but I found the CD
title via his website and now can buy my own copy! Needless to say, Jesse Winchester's music has
haunted me for nearly thirty years. Listen to it and you'll be smitten, too.

Lonesome On'Ry Mean Steve Young
Price $ 14.99
Steve Young is a singer/songwriter whose work encompasses country/rock/soul/gospel. He describes
his music as southern. Mr. Young is from Alabama but he was in California in the 60's and 70's and was
part of the scene that included the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Crosby, Stills and
Nash and so on. This CD has samples of his early intense sound from that period. During the 70's Mr.
Young became, intentionally or unitentitonally part of the country music outlaws with Waylon Jennings.
This cd has a generous sampling of Mr. Young most commercially successful music of the 70's. If you
want to hear a broad sampling of an iconoclastic "Southern" singer, this is a good bet.
