In The Beginning
The Byrds

Price $ 11.97
If you are expecting the pristine quality of the early Columbia recordings, you may want to pass on this one. However, if you are a serious Byrds fan with a sense of history, you will enjoy it. "In the Beginning" offers a fascinating look at some of the very earliest sessions by one of the most influential bands of all time. This set of rehearsal and demo recordings provide a surprisingly listenable glimpse of The Byrds as they were striving to refine their sound. It also reaffirms Gene Clark's invaluable role as both songwriter and vocalist. The sincerity which is evident in all the performances more than compensates for the rough edges. Highly recommended for all serious Byrds fans!

Live At The Fillmore [1969]
The Byrds

Price $ 13.99
Recorded at Bill Graham's legendary San Francisco concert hall during two shows in February 1969, this disc sounds like a practice session recorded in the morning after a particularly long, rough night. The vocals fall flat too often and rhythmic cohesion is always one measure away--too many noodly, irrelevant notes are slathered atop every song. Some of this can be explained by the absence of one former Byrd. In turning the band towards their country-rock bent and then splitting after less than a year, Gram Parsons left a hole that could never really be filled, not even by the nimble-fingered Clarence White.

Mr. Tamborine Man {Remastered}
The Byrds

Price $ 11.97
It's not overstating the case to contend that the Byrds' debut is the font from which all folk-rock spouts. The Bob Dylan-penned title track hit No. 1 two months before the album arrived, in the process heralding a new sound that braided involved lyrics with a driving beat, chiming guitars, and vaguely trippy harmonies. The album (and, indeed, it is an album, rather than a haphazard collection of songs, as was the standard of the day) followed through on the promise of the single. Four of the dozen songs on the original pressing were Dylan compositions, but the originals from Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn nearly matched their appeal, particularly "I Feel a Whole Lot Better," perhaps the quintessential Byrds tune. This 1996 reissue includes a half-dozen previously unreleased tracks. --Steven Stolder

Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
The Byrds

Price $ 11.49
If I owned only a single album it would be this or Willie's Phases & Stages. An xtra copy goes to the island, just in case. McQuinn cut most of Gram Parsons, but...., just listen to the Hickory Wind blowing silently in the Canadian Rockies. This changed the world. Ask Willie.

The Best Of The Byrds [Import]
The Byrds

Price $ 8.49
Fourteen Byrd standards recorded somewhere across the sea and probably "Eight Miles High."

The Best Of The Byrds:Greatest Hits Vol. 2
The Byrds

Price $ 9.97
When this album originally came out in 1972 (a year before the reunion album--the band's last), this Greatest Hits II made a lot of sense. The Byrds previous two albums especially (Byrdmaniax and Farther Along) contained some fairly weak tracks. So compiling a "greatest hits" album (though none of these even cracked the Top 40) was a golden opportunity to compile all the best tracks between 1968's The Notorious Byrd Brothers (not Sweetheart of the Rodeo as the previous reviewer indicated) through 1971's Farther Along.

The Byrds [Box Set]
The Byrds

Price $ 47.47
A Box Set: To the contrary, the original Byrds albums definitely ARE worth owning--specifically the first six: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," "Fifth Dimension," "Younger Than Yesterday," "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo." All of the above titles have been reissued by Columbia/Legacy with great booklet essays, photos, etc.; best of all, a generous number of bonus tracks (some of them utterly brilliant) have been appended to each CD. Moreover, many of the group's most enduring numbers have been left off the box set: the Gene Clark classics "Here Without You" and "Set You Free This Time"; their treatments of "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "Satisfied Mind"; "Change Is Now," etc.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers
The Byrds

Price $ 11.97
The Notorious Byrd Brothers captures the Byrds between the seminal folk-rock glories of their better-known mid-'60s triumphs and the equally influential country-rock that would soon follow, but the album is no holding action: with onetime Beach Boy associate Gary Usher producing and Roy Halee engineering, the band weaves its signature vocal harmonies and chiming guitars through a lusher, more impressionistic art-pop tapestry that stops just short of post-Sgt. Pepper cliché, employing phased vocals, sound effects, Moog synthesizer, and horns.
