Forums upgraded, spam cleaned out
Wednesday May 3rd, 6:09PM CST

Howdy all, we've had an absolute deluge of automated spam rained down on our little Honky Tonk forums here for the last few months. I'm not sure why they all think we're interested in their stupid offers and sites, but they're sure persistent about telling us that they're out there.

We've finally gotten around to upgrading our forum software, cleaning out the bad messages and putting in some measures to keep them off our little site here. Hope at least a few of you stuck around. Give the updated forums a try.

Wanted More Dead Than Alive - Lost Blaze Foley Album
Thursday December 1st, 1:27AM CST updated

Long lost country album recorded by Austin legend Blaze Foley with Leland and David Waddell and includes the Briarcliff nightingale Kimmie Rhodes as backup singer, and her ex-husband Joe Gracey on acoustic guitar Austin360 has a good review, as does the October edition of John Conquest's 3rd Coast Music.

Considered the "true" Blaze Foley studio album, we recommend this one highly.

New Orleans, where some of this country's best music has been made, and the Mississippi gulf coast have taken a devastating hit. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected.

Please support our neighbors on the coast with contributions, and if you're going to volunteer please do so via an established relief group as they're better equipped to organize and direct resources where they're most needed.

CNN Travel on Luckenbach
Friday November 5th, 3:28PM CST updated

CNN today is running a nice little writeup on Luckenbach with a smattering of Hill Country history. Sure they misspell Geronimo "Jeronimo," but you've got to forgive them -- its a AP story probably written by some damn yank. They do seem to get the feel and mood, and its always good to see a Texas Honky Tonk in the national press.

Austin City Limits Festival: Day 3
Monday September 27th, 4:19PM CST updated

Sunday at ACL wasn't quite as crowded as Saturday, but there were still plenty of people there.
  • Guy Forsyth - A modern songwriting bluesman who's become an Austin institution.
  • Kelly Willis - Another Austin favorite with an amazing voice, Kelly put on an excellent show in the early afternoon heat.
  • Mindy Smith - Folk and Americana with a powerfull voice.
  • The Roots - A funky combination of rap and jazz that drew a big crowd to the SBC stage.
  • North Mississippi Allstars - Southern blues/rock is quite alive and kickin', and these guys prove it. See them live, its well worth it.
  • Elvis Costello - He's Elvis Costello, and thats that. He played an excellent set to a huge crowd at the Cingular stage.
  • Spoon - Austin's breeding a lot of indie rock in the last few years, and Spoon is a prime cut example.
  • Drive by Truckers - Excellent Southern roots rock from these relative newcomers.
  • Wilco - The non-Son Volt half of Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy's Wilco has defied classification at every turn. Wilco played the SBC stage to the 30,000-40,000 people not listening to Pat Green.
  • Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Swinging, energetic toe-tappin' R&B and a little of everything else.
  • Cake - Quirky independent music that might be described as what you'd get if They Might Be Giants drank way too much cheap beer.
  • Ben Harper - Fresh off a new album with the Blind Boys of Alabama, fusion jam sensation Ben Harper closed the 2004 ACL festival playing to a sea of people covering 2/3rds of Zilker park.
So there you have it... the Austin City Limits festival has become yet another reason to call Austin the Live Music Capital of the World. See everyone at ACL '05.

Austin City Limits Festival: Day 2 Highlights
Tuesday September 21st, 10:22AM CST updated

Well, 104 degree heat indexes and massive crowds didn't keep anyone away for Saturday's ACL lineup. In fact, Saturday was busier than ever and if you camped out near the stage to be up close when your favorite act came up, it could be quite a challenge to get in and out to get more beer.

Naturally we braved the seering heat and crowds (who, in Austin traditon, were quite friendly) to hear as much music as humanly possible inbetween stops by the beer tent and the bar-b-que vendors.

  • Mason Jennings - The "man with a guitar" songwriter and storyteller type, Ryan Adams-esque.
  • Cat Power - Deep, low and slow emotional outpouring, the kind of cathartic songs you can immagine coming out of the corner of your favorite coffee shop.
  • Josh Rouse - Circling around roots rock and jazz, Rouse has a compelling sound grounded in the musical cross-breeding of the 70s.
  • Ray Lamontagne - Newcomer Lamontagne evokes that gravel-voiced sound of Neil Young or Van Morrison and draws you in with his blunt and honest lyrics.
  • Endochine - Austin's own modern rock sensation did not disapoint on the AV stage.
  • Big Head Todd & the Monsters - Long time independant rockers from Colorado played an excellent show to an enormous crowd at the big SBC stage.
  • The Gourds - Somewhere between bluegrass and Hill Country punk you'll find the Gourds, and its likely you'll find them drinking some whiskey. Returning for their 3rd ACL, the Gourds simply play music that makes you feel good. Be sure to check out their latest, Cow, Fish, Fowl or Pig.
  • Bruce Robison - Hubby to local country-pop darling Kelly Willis and brother to that other Robison on the charts these days, Charlie, Bruce is a true Texas songwriter. Having wrote Tim McGraw's Angry all the Time, the Dixie Chick's Travelin' Soldier and George Strait's Desperately, Bruce is enjoying some well-deserved success and it's always a treat to hear him play his own songs.
  • Modest Mouse - These energetic indie rockers have enjoyed quite a growing following in Austin over the last few years, and they kept a hot and tired crowd at the Cingular stage hoppin' on their feet.
  • Dashboard Confessional - Heavily recycled angsty teen rock. If you find this music on your teen's iPod, do them a favor: buy them a Green Day album and teach them the importance of knowing where your music comes from.
  • Reckless Kelly - Hailing from Idaho, the Braun brothers made for Texas quite some time ago and have since been producing a sound blending progressive country and alternative rock that can only come from Austin's vibrant culture of musical fusion.
  • The Pixies - That's right, The Pixies. Back in full force after more than a decade, this was the show that many camped out all day for, and they did their fans true. We couldn't even see where the crowd stopped for this show.
Yeah, our post-festival hangover has put us a little behind getting these updates posted... don't worry, we'll have Day 3 coverage, pictures and even some bonus video up soon (or, maybe after one or two more glasses of Makers Mark).

Austin City Limits Festival: Day 1 Highlights
Saturday September 18th, 2:05AM CST updated

Its September in Austin, and that means another year of the wildly successfull Austin City Limits Music Festival. Held in Austin's beautiful Zilker Park, the festival is now in its third year and is going strong. Three-day passes sold out Friday morning (single-day passes are still available) and attendance is expected to top 75,000 per day this year.

Naturally our crack team of beer drinkers and music lovers is on-scene to cover the event. Here are some highlights of the acts we saw on Day 1, and we'll have a full report at the conclusion of the event.

  • Bob Schneider - A local Austin favorite who did not dissapoint. Schneider is a quite prolific musician, ranging from hard rock to Western swing.
  • Blind Boys from Alabama - Founded in 1939, the Blind Boys are still wooing the world with their amazing gospel harmonies. On the big Cingular stage, this incredibly talented ensemble kept a quite large Friday afternoon crowd clapping and swaying.
  • Neko Case - Blusey Alternative Country; supported by an upright bass, banjo and pedal steel, Neko's magnificient voice is one that will not let you go.
  • John Butler Trio- Guitar rock, blues and reggae from down under. We knew these guys were good when we heard just a few songs from them at SXSW this year and thankfully someone was good enough to invite them back to Austin. Check these guys out!
  • Butch Hancock - Flatlander tried and true, Butch is Butch and its hard to say anything more than that. Worth seeing with or without fellow Flatlanders Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
  • Broken Social Scene - Alt Rockers from Toronto with a good energetic sound.
  • Particle - A funk jam band, or "funktronic" in their own words, Particle is a good show that drew an impressive crowd to the Heineken stage this year.
  • Toots & the Maytals - Roots reggae masters delivered an amazing show that kept half of Zilker park on their feet for an hour.
  • Franz Ferdinand - Alt Rock from England, think Talking Heads on fast-forward with a dash of funk. Returning to Austin after their impressive SXSW performance.
  • Los Lonely Boys - Blues, Country and Rock with hauntingly amazing guitar work from local favorites in the process of making it big. Los Lonely Boys could be the most explosive thing to come out of Texas since Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, and they're live shows prove they're worth that kind of hype.
  • Sheryl Crow - She's Sherl Crow, and thats why she was on the big stage at the end of opening day... well, that and she's dating Austin's golden boy, Lance Armstrong. No supprise we're seeing quite a bit of Sheryl in Austin these days.
Well, thats all the news thats fit to print from ACL festival Day 1... we'll be back tomorrow with more and if you're lucky, we'll put down the beers and take a few pictures on Day 2.

Willie Nelson survives Picnic & UFO's
Tuesday July 13th, 5:47PM CST updated

Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic was held in Ft. Worth, Texas this year, and as usual was a great sucess. Willie recently had hand surgery which will keep him off the road for awhile, but you can always count on Willie to come back fighing.

Daddy's Hands, Luck, Tx

I remember daddy's hands
folded silently in prayer
And reachin' out to hold me,
when I had a nightmare
You could read quite a story
in the callous' and lines
Years of work and worry
had left their mark behind

I remember daddy's hands
how they held my mama tight
And patted my back
for something done right
There are things that I'd forgotten
that I loved about the man
But I'll always remember
the love in daddy's hands...

I remember daddy's hands
workin' 'til they bled
Sacrificed unselfishly
just to keep us all fed
If I could do things over, I'd live my life again
And never take for granted
the love in daddy's hands …

I've come to understand
There was always love in daddy's hands.
by Holly Dunn

Dad had surgery on his left hand Wednesday. After a year of trying everything from Arnica to Zinc to relieve the pain, he finally had to break down and let them whittle on it a little. Doctors tell him he'll be back playing Trigger after the incision is totally mended, followed by a few weeks of physical therapy. With your healing thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery he may very well be On the Road Again sooner than predicted. Thanks to everyone for the genuine love and heartfelt concern. Keep the faith and he'll see you soon. He's trying as hard as he possibly can to get back to his fans and the life he loves making music with his friends.

CHRISTMAS WITH ARKEY BLUE - A Blessing

Sit back on this one, I think:
Remember the Star Trek bar room Scene? ask the kid. I feel a ramble coming on,Honky Tonk Texas, USA & 3B Information Systems) disclaims any involment with this article, it's just America. Fair enough?, by me. Merry Christmas 2002:
Move on. Some of us have peace and others are locked into psycholocical "hell, So Be It & God Bless". Coming over the mountain from Camp Wood to Leakey, I pausued to decided if we cound make it to Arkey's Silver Dollar Saloon by dark.
Soon,a phone call assured us at least a stool (my preference) existed. Annette offered me a huge hug and welcome. We had our usual talk about Arkey & country music Soon, Rhonda showed up, and Texas became the largest state in the union again. XMas with Arkey Blue in Blandera was a trip. Coming from west Texas (Del RIO? Cicadad Acuna), being part of Texas, feeling it ...... but wait my daughter Scottie gave me a Cd "The Weary Boy". These kids have it. This is good country, and havin' spent Christmas with Arkey and a few friends around his fireplace, hearing the local boys pick, feelin' all right, at least.
Oh yeah, I thought I'd meant an angel, but.....I think I told you that. I gotta stop this stuff. HAPPY NEW YEARS 2003

Tommy Elskes Benefit : December 15th
Monday December 9th, 3:27AM CST

Schroeder, TX - Schroeder Hall, the second oldest dance hall in Texas, is hosting a benefit for the Austin based singer/songwriter, Tommy Elskes, on Sunday, December 15, 2002, between 1:30 PM - 10:00 PM.
Smokey Wilson, originator of the event explains, "One of our musical friends is experiencing some problems, and needs our help. The truly great singer / songwriter / guitar player, Tommy Elskes, has had an unfortunate event occur in his life. Several months ago, his ex-wife shot him, and then took her own life. Tommy was hit in the left arm and has had to have extensive surgery. Everyone is wishing him the best, and he is in all of our prayers. The doctors don't know if he will ever be able to use his left hand to play guitar again. (They at first wanted to amputate it, but Tommy talked them into trying to save it). Tommy, like a lot of musicians, has no insurance, so we decided to celebrate Tommy still being with us by having a Music Fest. Everyone attending the Benefit will be asked for a donation with all proceeds going to help defray Tommy's medical expenses."
Texas Music artists scheduled to appear on December 15th include Larry Joe Taylor, Shake Russell, Mike Blakely e Los Yahoos, Kelly McGuire, Mark Jungers, Jarrod Birmingham, Forlini & Cross, Smokey Wilson, Sheriff Mark Gilliam, Bill Pekar, Bob Curry, Leon Vines, Gordon Barth & Duke Royal, Dr Moto, High Speed Hay Ride, Steve Brooks, John Reeves, Marvin Werth, Bill McNeal, Paul McLaughlin, Ashlee Rose, Alton Rex, Jack Motley, Bear Mugford, R-Band, Jay Johnson, Johnny Greenberg, Joe Lopez Blues Band and others to be announced.

The Downliners
Saturday November 30th, 10:20PM CST updated

Previous to last Thursday's show at The Contiental Club, this "old hippie" was dragged from his bed to see the band, "you've just gotta see this, dad". This is the problem with bringing your children up around rock & roll and GOOD country music. When one of your kids is born in the back of a pickup truck on the way to a "Willie" show and Willie names the little turd (now 25 years old) Willie, man, you know you have a problem coming. BUT tonight after twenty years (yeah, twenty), it's his older brother who demanded that I return to The Contiental to see The Downliners. Now I haven't been completely lost for twenty years. I've worked on Honky Tonk Texas, USA and this web site, along with several cd productions and sweeped a lot of floors along with changing a lot of diapers. It's just that on that night in 1981 with Slow Bob & Red Deb of Red Rose fame, it was amazing to see Roky Erkison & the Aliens - real up close at The Continental Club!

Bob and I were across the street at the Austin Motel when we pulled on our boots and Manny Gammage TEXAS Hatter's hats, did one last........(well it was the early '80'), and headed across the road. Bob had never seen Roky (live)...... I was not that pure.
Twenty years later, here I was with a small crowd listening to a band my son had been raving about, The Downliners, and he has damn good taste. His dad, Willie, Chico, and Poodie made sure of that.

Anyway, Jason Shepard opened with a self-penned song which was smooth until the end when Jessie Duke cut loose on his Fender with his cigarette glued to his lips (where it remained until the second half of the show), in spite of the mike in front of him. Something starts twiling in my vodka crazed mind.
Suddenly, Matt Mollica blasts his "TUBE" run organ with smoke bellowing out, and I started to catch on, slowly.
My son said , "See, they've been listening to Sunvolt, The Jayhawaks, Uncle Tupelo and the Old 97's'". I replied, "yeah, but it's more than that!" Mick Southland continued with his strong bass (and compsing) as Brian DiFrank keep a steady and srong drum beat. Who were these guys?

Suddenly, after a copy of a Gram Parson's song, I realized it was none of the above. Sure these fine young musicians had done there homework, but it went farther than that, by far.

Jessie on his with his unused mike (until towaords the show's end), reminded me of Robbie Robertson who never wrote a song or sang forThe Band but was a great guitar player, Matt Mollica on his smoking "tube" organ reminded me of Garth Hudson (but many years younger- and a somewhat smaller organ), Brian DiFrank had a srong and steady drum beat (but no mandolin) - like Levon Helm, but Jason Sheperd and Mick Suthland had to remind one of a musical/lyical combinnation of Levon Helm, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko (with his great bass licks).

Catch these guys when you can, and if you're not familiar with The Band, that's what this web site is for.

"Tonight, I need to be rudderless."

Judge Frank Monroe granted the FDIC's request and now has until December 16, 2002 to file an objection to Gary Bradley's attempted discharge of his most recent scam?.

Contact FDIC attorney Sam Taylor(SaTaylor@FDIC.gov) and urge him to fully investigate any fraud committed by Gary Bradley. In the FDIC's deposition of Bradley on April 30 and May 1, 2002, Bradley "testified regarding a number of convoluted business transactions and asset conveyances, but was unable to recall many details of same." Since Bradley is not forthcoming with his financial information, the FDIC should subpeona and depose Bradley's numerous business partners to find out the full truth about Bradley's assets in order that the American taxpayers be paid what we are owed by Bradley.

Recent press reports have informed the public that Gary Bradley has been using a trust - the Lazarus Exempt Trust created by his sister - at his disposal, withdrawing cash without any timeline for paying it back. The trust's assets have been valued at THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS. While this is certainly a good development for the nation's taxpayers, if the FDIC does not object to Bradley's discharge, we will not receive a penny from that trust - or any other trusts, off-shore accounts (Mafia?), or other assets Bradley may have hidden over the years. That is why it is imperative that the FDIC conduct a full investigation to determine if fraud was used in securing the Circle C loans that Mr.Bradley personally guaranteed AND that the FDIC collects the debt that American taxpayers are owed by Senor Bradley, including any future income that Bradley earns.

Besides all these scams, Gary won't even pay his son's child support which Austin's Premier divorce attorney, Ted Terry (and personal pal of Martin at HonkyTonkTx.com), has had to drag from his hidden "assXXXX" (assetts).Good job Ted. It's election time: Either Vote for Gary and his legislative pals, "I don't have the millions I owe you, America" or Willie Nelson's Farm Aidand the American Farmer.

Is the choice clear enough for Texas Farmer's? We think so. Call your legislator and theFDIC in Dallas.

Thanks, and remember, "Don't Mess with Texas".

08/26/02 Tommy is out of the hospital and doing much better! Tommy will be spending some time with his family in New Mexico to rest and begin the challenging healing process ahead. As of a couple days ago the doctors were very optimistic that will make a 100% recovery. Tommy hopes to be back on stage by Thanksgiving. His sprits are positive and he said he is ready to get to work on his road to recovery. Stay tuned for more updates!
09/27/02 Tommy is back in Austin and doing much better. He still has a cast on his arm but that will be coming off in the next few weeks. Looks like no more operations will be necessary! Tommyis anxious to back to work. He has been overwhelmed by all the support of his family, friends and fans. Picking up the guitar is out of the question for another couple of months so Tommy is putting together a show that will feature his voice and with back up by other musicians. They are rehearsing now and should be ready to go sometime in October.
10/18/02 Well, as one can imagine, the healing process nevers moves along fast enough. Despite the intense pain, Tommy is determined to get through this in a positive state of mind. Smokey’s festival has been the perfect antidote! Please tell all your friends and come out to the party. If you can not stay the weekend come out for a day. Let’s all get together and support a friend in need!
Martin & all at Honky Tonk Texas wishes our old pal the best in the world. We love you Tommy. Stop by and say hello.(see your box at the Chili Parlour!.)

Music Festival and Campout - October 26 and 27 at the Smokey Wilson RanchforTommy Elskes, Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th.
Smokey explains, "One of our musical friends is experiencing some problems, and needs our help. The truly great singer-songwriter-guitar player, Tommy Elskes, has had an unfortunate event occur in his life. Recently his ex-wife shot him, and then took her own life. Tommy, like a lot of musicians, has no insurance, so we decided to celebrate Tommy still being with us by having a Music Fest."
Jarrod Birmingham, Shake Russell, Mike Blakley, Kelly McGuire, Chris Holzhouse, Geronimo Trevenio, Smokey Wilson, Bill McNeal, Jack Motley, Billy High, C.J. Berkman, Tim Henderson, David Stockton, Paul McLaughlin, Gordon Barth, Adan Davila, Bill Pekar, Eric G, Ashlee Rose, Alton Rex, John Reeves, Leon Vines, and Marvin Werth are all sharing their talents during the two day event.

Performances are scheduled between 1 PM and 12 Midnight on Saturday, October 26th and between 3 PM and 11 PM on Sunday, October 27th. There will also be playing and singing around the campfires on Saturday night after the main show too.
A entry fee will be charged with the proceeds going to help Tommy defray some of his medical expenses. Camping is available in one of the best camping spots in the state, the Smokey Wilson Ranch. Smokey invites everyone to come out for this good cause, and to "bring your instruments, what you need to camp and a good attitude."

ABC Documentary on Family Farmers by Willie Nelson
Tuesday October 1st, 8:44PM CST

"Strong Roots, Fragile Farms" will be released October 6, 2002. The film is narrated by Willie Nelson with a music by Peter Buffett, who scored the Dances with Wolves soundtrack. The film explores the real life impact of globalization upon today's family farmers in Iowa, North Carolina, the Philippines, and Mexico.
The decision to air "Strong Roots, Fragile Farms" rests with the local ABC-TV stations. Therefore, it is imperative that citizens concerned about the plight of family farm agriculture and rural communities should write their local ABC-TV affiliate as soon as possible. If there is sufficient interest from the public, the program managers or station managers will likely respond positively. To find the list of your state's ABC-TV affiliates, go to http://abc.abcnews.go.com/site/localstations.html Click on your state, and you get the list your state's ABC-TV stations, their telephone numbers, mailing addresses, and e mail addresses. MICKEY NEWBURY DIES AT 62
Tuesday October 1st, 8:36PM CST updated

Mickey Newbury, a songsmith credited with helping usher in a new era of country music songwriting, died Saturday night after a long illness. He was 62.
Newbury died at his home in Vida, Ore., where he had lived since the 1980s. Details on funeral arrangements weren't available last night. ''Mickey had been ill for a while,'' said Owsley Manier, a longtime Newbury friend and a Nashville independent music producer. ''We've all been expecting this for a while.''
Here's a look at just a few of the artists who recorded Newbury's songs: Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, Elvis Such graet songs as "I Don't Think About Her Anymore", "She Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye," "An American Trilogy", "33rd of August" and many, many more.

Hot Nut Leader Dies
Monday September 30th, 2:37AM CST updated

Doug Clark, drummer for Hot Nuts dies at 66 For 47 years, they've been the original gross-out guys, the prototype fraternity-house dance band, their lyrics mild by today's standards, but risqué nonetheless. If you have partaken in a fraternity party since 1955, at a college anywhere up and down the Eastern Seaboard, then you probably know Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts -- and have heard of their lore.
Monday, the band lost its founder, drummer and spiritual leader. Doug Clark died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, near where he grew up and still lived, after three years of declining health. He was 66. During those three years, he barely touched his worn-out set of Ludwig drums, but he frequently traveled with the band that continues to play from Oxford, Miss., to New Haven, Conn. "He hadn't felt up to performing," said older brother John, the band's lead singer and out-front guy from its inception. "He spent his last days thinking about how great his life has been and how blessed he's been. "He was always amazed -- and pleased -- that he got to do what he loved doing and make a living out of it." The band, he said, will continue to perform and keep its name as a tribute to his brother. Doug's son, Montey, has replaced his father on the drums.
The Hot Nuts took the Clark brothers on an amazing ride -- with one or the other always at the wheel going from the KA house at Ole Miss to the Cottage Club at Princeton. Doug Clark was born in Chapel Hill on June 18, 1936, son of Rebecca and John Clark Sr., who died six months ago. Chapel Hill is where the Hot Nuts started. The Clarks raised their sons on Crest Drive, across the train tracks from the stone-walled campus, in an all-black community that bordered Carrboro. Early on, it became clear that schooling wasn't his interest, entertaining was. At all-black Lincoln High School, he was a star quarterback and baseball and basketball player and the marching band's drum major. Christmas of 1954, he was serving drinks at the holiday party at the nearby Sigma Nu house when he heard Willie Hargrave's trio jammin' on stage. Told they made a night, he went home and immediately began organizing his own band, playing fraternity parties at UNC and N.C. State. They called themselves The Tops, but that band ended a year later. From that split emerged the Doug Clark Combo, which included Doug on drums and John on saxophone. The band played "Hot Nuts," which Doug had learned from Hargrave's band, and soon the fraternity boys were calling them "Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts." Their music has been a collection of beach, rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues. But always mixed in was The Hot Nuts Show, in which John Clark led the crowd in singing unprintable lyrics. Charlotte lawyer Jon Barrett recalls the first time he heard them as a boy in Chapel Hill. A high school friend of his sister Nancy's dropped by one afternoon. "My parents were out and he and my sister had this clandestine meeting in the driveway," Barrett said. "He slipped her something. I was about 10 and had to know what it was. It was a Hot Nuts album. Before our parents got home, we turned it on and couldn't believe what we heard. "We spent the next few weeks memorizing the songs." Through the decades, Doug and the band were the act of choice for a successful party. "When your fraternity was lucky enough to get them, everybody came to your party from all over the campus," said Bill Ashendorf of Charlotte, UNC class of 1961. "You knew you were going to have the best party for the weekend." The 1960s were probably their busiest decade, when they played 28 nights a month. But even now, they still play three to four nights a week. Often, their audience consists of children of the students they performed for when they first started. The band's current gigs include debutante parties in Atlanta and Savannah and a graduation party at the exclusive St. Catherine's School, a boarding school in Richmond, Va. For the millennium, they played a country club in Jacksonville, Fla. They play birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and weddings and are one of the most-requested bands for college reunions. "What Doug and the band were then is what they are now," said Larry Farber, a partner in East Coast Entertainment of Charlotte, which books many of their shows.
"Everybody who's heard the Hot Nuts probably have a verse of their own," he said. "There will be a lot of sad people; Doug was really a beloved guy. If you need any verses, I've got them, but I ain't giving them out."
The Hot Nuts were a major influence on Dallas Blues music in the early '60's with shows promoted by famous Dallas promoter Angus Wynne with financial backing by Don & Tom Lively.
"Hot Nuts, Hot Nuts, You get them from the Peanut Man.".

Clay Henry, The Beer Drinking Goat
Wednesday September 25th, 8:37PM CST updated

Go to The Trading Post in Lajitas, a town of about 100 along the Rio Grande River near Big Bend National Park, and get some long neck beers. Buy them, then feed them to Clay Henry, the beer-drinking goat. Well, not all of them.
People come from all over to stand outside Clay Henry's pen and feed him beers all day long. There is no other good reason to be in Lajitas, except it's TEXAS
. Once you pop the cap, Clay will do the rest. As Clay's drinking buddies -- smaller goats who cannot hold the bottle by themselves -- clamor about begging swigs, Clay -- a strapping black mountain goat -- takes the bottle from you, teeth gripping the glass. He rocks his head backward and chugs. When it is empty, Clay spits the bottle aside.
Honky Tonk Texas visits Clay often and usually end up staying quite a while! By the way, his favorite brew is Texas's own Shiner's.

Goat Castrated
Wednesday September 25th, 8:36PM CST updated

Clay Henry III, beer drinking goat and mayor of the west Texas border town of Lajitas, was attacked by local Jim Bob Hargrove and castrated. Hargrove committed the heinous deed after seeing the goat drinking beer on a Sunday, when the area's blue laws prevent the sale of alcohol to humans. Tourists had apparently been feeding Clay Henry his usual staple of Shiner longnecks, and Hargrove threatened to castrate the goat, according to eyewitnesses.
The mayor was found lying next to his testicles on Monday, Aug. 5. Ranchers sutured his wounds, and Clay was up slugging down cold ones soon after. Hargrove faces charges of animal cruelty.

Dance Halls & Last Calls By Geronimo Trevino III
Thursday September 19th, 11:42PM CST updated

Sometimes, the best ideas come to you in the simplest of ways. Take the case of country singer and historian Geronimo Treviño III. After hanging out and playing in several historic dance halls in Texas, he was struck with what a great subject matter these old buildings are. He has just written an amazing book titled "Dance Halls and Last Calls: The History of Texas Country Music," with the help of his lovely wife, Judy. Many of these old halls are well over a century old and have a massive amount of history to be told. By 1998 Treviño and his wife had accumulated all the necessary photographs; many were taken by them while others were donated by area historians. Treviño contacted several Texas book publishers to see if they would be interested in the project once it was completed. Much to his satisfaction, they all gave him favorable feedback. A few wanted to sign him to a contract and publish it right away, but Treviño wasn't ready. When the time was right to locate a publisher for his book, Treviño looked at his alma mater first. When he contacted Texas A&M University Press, they were very enthusiastic. Unfortunately he was about to encounter his first setback. As Treviño explains, "I submitted my first draft of the book to the publisher, who then gives it to a reader, who is someone who is supposed to be an expert on the subject. Once the reader finishes the manuscript, they give it back to the publisher with their recommendation, which is either positive or negative. My book received a favorable review with only a few suggestions for changes, which I made right away. Then the waiting began." The days turned to weeks, then to months with no word from the publisher. Finally they contacted Treviño with some disturbing news. They liked the book but were disputing some of his facts.
Talks with Republic of Texas Press went well and he was impressed with their enthusiasm and promptness. "I took the manuscript to them," says Treviño, "and within a week they called back and said, 'We want to do this!' " The book is ready to go and according to the Republic of Texas Press, it will be published in April. This 10-year labor of love by Geronimo Treviño will finally see the light of day. So be sure you pick up a copy of the magazine and in April be sure to buy the book. This book will be a huge asset to the history of Texas music and one that should be in every Texan's collection. Fans of Texas music can visit Treviño's Web site at geronimotrevino.com.

Alexander from Germany; It's interesting that you ask, because the first people to settle the hill country around Austin and San Antonio, besides the Native Americans were Germans escaping the harsh times and landlords in the mid 1800'.. Look for our likes to "History". There's one on Grapetown Halle. I'm not real sure the exact original meaning, but I would imagine it came from the beat of the music which sorta sounded like "honkytonk". Maybe you could review your native language in that period and see if there is some word that resembles honkytonk. Please let us know what you find out and let us know. thanks and keep in touch. FARM AID 2002
Sunday September 15th, 12:11PM CST updated

Along with founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Melencap will be Kid Rock, Dave Matthews, and Keith Urban.
The fifteenth Farm Aid will be held in the Post-Gazette Pavillion in Burgettstown, PA, but is already sold out!
CMT television will carry the event and you can help out our farmers by calling 1-800-Farm Aid.
Farm Aid is coming to Pennsylvania at a critical time for the state’s agriculture. Just as Pennsylvania family farmers are embracing sustainable agriculture practices and creative partnerships with urban consumers, rural communities are fending off the advances of factory hog farms that are trying to gain a foothold in many areas of the state.
Willie Nelson says these corporate-run operations have polluted many previously healthy rural areas across the country, and he believes it will take continued strength and resolve for Pennsylvania farmers, consumers and policymakers to oppose the companies’ initially appealing offers.
“People in Pennsylvania know how much family farmers contribute to the state’s health, food quality, economy and environment. Farm Aid 2002 is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the perseverance of farm families and stand strong with them against the growth of factory hog farms in rural Pennsylvania,” said Willie.
Willie's also real pleased about the political events in Nevada, which might become the first state to totally legalize the sale of Hemp. If it was good enough for George Washington to grow for rope, cloth, paper, etc., why don't we give it a try? It'd sure help our farmers and economy (not to mention Willie's music and that means country music, which means America!).

Click this image to join the Texas Psych Group! The Roky Erickson CD Club is a group of fans that distribute and share Roky's music via a Tree & Leaf Network. The Trunk makes a copy for the Branches. The Branches make copies for the Leaves. This is all very decentralized and hinges upon the United States Supreme Court decision protecting the RIGHT to home dub. Group members contribute rare or unreleased recordings by Roky Erickson or the 13th Floor Elevators to be digitally edited and burned to CDR. These CDRs are then made available to all group members. The CD's are traded among the Network of fans or made for beginners for blanks and postage. There is also a .00 gift collected per CD for Roky. The discs move by trade or barter. The .00 gift to Roky is the only money collected. If you want to become involved in this, just join the Texas Psych Group by clicking the Roky image or the link at the bottom. If you want copies of past CD-R issues, just speak out on the groups. Somebody should come forward and burn it. So far, fourteen issues are available to group members:

2. Droughts and Floods threaten Family Farmers
Farm Aid is coordinating a national response to assist family farmers threatened by this year's droughts. On June 20th, Farm Aid activated its Family Farm Disaster Fund to provide emergency assistance to farmers and support one-on-one credit counseling and advocacy. To make a donation to the fund or to find out more about Farm Aid's efforts, go to our website: http://www.farmaid.org

3. 2nd Annual Willie Nelson 10K for Farm Aid set for August 25, 2002 The second annual Willie Nelson's 10K for Farm Aid road race and walk will take place on Sunday, August 25, in Austin, TX. To register for the race and for more information, go to our web site and click on the link to the race.

4. New Farm Bill Signed by President - The Winners and the Losers While many politicians cited "saving the family farm" as the justification for approving a new farm policy, the new farm bill will do very little to alter the fundamental problem in American food production: increasing concentration and control of the market by giant grain traders and food processors that push family farmers out of farming and off their land.

The new Farm Bill will go into effect in October 2002. Overall, Farm Aid is very disappointed that the political leaders in Congress failed to address the root causes of the farm crisis. With several exceptions, the new farm bill is pretty much a "status quo" farm policy:
1) prices for farmers, while slightly higher in this new bill, will still fall short of covering cost of production;
2) taxpayer subsidies to farmers will continue to be used to prop up the entire system - a food production system that primarily benefits the largest farms and the interests of the giant corporate agribusiness companies, and
3) meatpackers will continue to be able to use their massive volumes of livestock to drive prices down and put independent farmers and ranchers at a competitive disadvantage.

Intense lobbying pressure by the giant food companies defeated the gains achieved in the Senate Farm Bill. These key victories for family farmers were either watered down or eliminated all together during the negotiations on the compromise bill between the House and Senate:
- The ban on packer ownership of livestock was thrown out;
- The country of origin labeling will not be enforced for two more years;
- The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) funds will be used to subsidize factory livestock producers.

What family farmers won:
- an improved nationwide safety net for dairy producers;
- mandatory country-of-origin labeling for meats, fruits, vegetables, fish and peanuts; (mandatory after two years) - requiring U.S.-labeled foods be from plants and animals born, raised and processed in America;
- increased conservation and rural development funding;
- a new Conservation Security Program for working lands.

What family farmers lost:
- a fair market price for farm commodities that supports family farmers' cost of production;
- a ban on meatpackers owning livestock;
- natural disaster assistance for crop and livestock losses suffered by producers in 2001;
- targeting of farm program benefits to family farmers.

The debate over the next farm bill has already begun. We will need all of you who care about safe food, sustainable farms, healthy environment, and a thriving rural economy to demand a better, fairer farm policy. Farm Aid will keep you up to date on important developments, and continue to ask for your support in this important fight.

5. New: Farm Aid's latest newsletter available on line for the first time. In the new edition of Farm Aid Update, Farm Aid explores several examples of industrial agriculture's harmful impact on our food. Some of the issues explored are food irradiation, antibiotic resistance, as well as sustainable alternatives. The recent floods in the Hill Country, reaching 15 inches in some places, has caused heavvy damage to several old Honky Tonks.
Luckenbach was completely flooded with over a foot of water in the dance hall and bar/gift shop. The 150 year old blacksmith's shop and cotten gin were completely destroyed. The 4th of July celebration was delayed.
It is reported that heavy water is causing the evacuation of Helotes west of San Antonio and home of John T. Floore Country Store, one of Texas' most famous Honky Tonks.
Gruene Hall, which sits on the Guadalupe River just north of New Braunfels, is also in danger.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TEXAN
Thursday April 18th, 9:24PM CST

Dear Friends, Last year, I wrote a small piece about what it means to me to be a Texan. My friends know it means about damned near everything. Anyway, this fella asked me to reprint what I'd wrote and I didn't have it. So I set out to think about rewriting something. I considered writing about all the great things I love about Texas. There are way too many things to list. I can't even begin to do it justice. Lemme let you in on my short list. It starts with The Window at Big Bend, which in and of itself is proof of God. It goes to Lake Sam Rayburn where my Grandad taught me more about life than fishin, and enough about fishin to last a lifetime. I can talk about Tyler, and Longview, and Odessa and Cisco, and Abilene and Poteet and every place in between. Every little part of Texas feels special. Every person who ever flew the Lone Star thinks of Bandera or Victoria or Manor or wherever they call "home" as the best little part of the best state. So I got to thinkin about it, and here's what I really want to say. Last year, I talked about all the great places and great heroes who make Texas what it is. I talked about Willie and Waylon and Michael Dell and Michael DeBakey and my Dad and LBJ and Denton Cooley. talked about everybody that came to mind. It took me sitting here tonight reading this stack of emails and thinkin about where I've been and what I've done since the last time I wrote on this occasion to remind me what it is about Texas that is really great. You see, this last month or so I finally went to Europe for the first time. I hadn't ever been, and didn't too much want to. But you know all my damned friends are always talking about "the time they went to Europe." So, I finally went. It was a hell of a trip to be sure. All they did when they saw me was say the same thing, before they'd ever met me. "Hey cowboy, we love Texas." I guess the hat tipped em off. But let me tell you what, they all came up with a smile on their faces. You know why? They knew for damned sure that I was gonna be nice to em. They knew it cause they knew I was from Texas. They knew something that hadn't even hit me. They knew Texans, even though they'd never met one. That's when it occurred to me. Do you know what is great about Texas? Do you know why when my friend Beverly and I were trekking across country to see 15 baseball games we got sick and had to come home after 8? Do you know why every time I cross the border I say, "Lord, please don't let me die in _____"? Do you know why children in Japan can look at a picture of the great State and know exactly what it is about the same time they can tell a rhombus from a trapezoid? I can tell you that right quick. You. The same spirit that made 186 men cross that line in the sand in San Antonio damned near 165 years ago is still in you today. Why else would my friend send me William Barrett Travis' plea for help in an email just a week ago, or why would Charles Stanfield ask me to reprint a Texas Independence column from a year ago? What would make my friend Elizabeth say, "I don't know if I can marry a man who doesn't love Texas like I do?" Why in the hell are 1,000 people coming to my house this weekend to celebrate a holiday for what used to be a nation that is now a state? Because the spirit that made that nation is the spirit that burned in every person who founded this great place we call Texas, and they passed it on through blood or sweat to every one of us. You see, that spirit that made Texas what it is is alive in all of us, even if we can't stand next to a cannon to prove it, and it's our responsibility to keep that fire burning. Every person who ever put a "Native Texan" or an "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could" sticker on his car understands. Anyone who ever hung a map of Texas on their wall or flew a Lone Star flag on their porch knows what I mean. My Dad's buddy Bill has an old saying. He says that some people were forged of a hotter fire. Well, that's what it is to be Texan. To be forged of a hotter fire. To know that part of Colorado was Texas. That part of New Mexico was Texas. That part of Oklahoma was Texas. Yep. Talk all you want. Part of what you got was what we gave you. To look at a picture of Idaho or Istanbul and say, "what the Hell is that?" when you know that anyone in Idaho or Istanbul who sees a picture of Texas knows damned good and well what it is. It isn't the shape, it isn't the state, it's the state of mind. You're what makes Texas. The fact that you would take 15 minutes out of your day to read this, because that's what Texas means to you, that's what makes Texas what it is. The fact that when you see the guy in front of you litter you honk and think, "Sonofabitch. Littering on MY highway." When was the last time you went to a person's house in New York and you saw a big map of New York on their wall? That was never. When did you ever drive through Oklahoma and see their flag waving on four businesses in a row? Can you even tell me what the flag in Louisiana looks like? I damned sure can't. But I bet my ass you can't drive 20 minutes from your house and not see a business that has a big Texas flag as part of its logo. If you haven't done business with someone called AllTex something or Lone Star somebody or other, or Texas such and such, you hadn't lived here for too long. When you ask a man from New York what he is, he'll say a stockbroker, or an accountant, or an ad exec. When you ask a woman from California what she is, she'll tell you her last name or her major. Hell either of em might say "I'm a republican," or they might be a democrat. When you ask a Texan what they are, before they say, "I'm a Methodist," or "I'm a lawyer," or "I'm a Smith," they tell you they're a Texan. I got nothin against all those other places, and Lord knows they've probably got some fine folks, but in your gut you know it just like I do, Texas is just a little different. So tomorrow when you drive down the road and you see a person broken down on the side of the road, stop and help. When you are in a bar in California, buy a Californian a drink and tell him it's for Texas Independence Day. Remind the person in the cube next to you that he wouldn't be here enjoying this if it weren't for Sam Houston, and if he or she doesn't know the story, tell them. When William Barrettt Travis wrote in 1836 that he would never surrender and he would have Victory or Death, what he was really saying was that he and his men were forged of a hotter fire. They weren't your average every day men. Well, that is what it means to be a Texan. It meant it then, and that's why it means it today. It means just what all those people North of the Red River accuse us of thinking it means. It means there's no mountain that we can't climb. It means that we can swim the Gulf in the winter. It means that Earl Campbell ran harder and Houston is bigger and Dallas is richer and Alpine is hotter and Stevie Ray was smoother and God vacations in Texas. It means that come Hell or high water, when the chips are down and the Good Lord is watching, we're Texans by damned, and just like in 1836, that counts for something. So for today at least, when your chance comes around, go out and prove it. It's true because we believe it's true. If you are sitting wondering what the Hell I'm talking about, this ain't for you. But if the first thing you are going to do when the Good Lord calls your number is find the men who sat in that tiny mission in San Antonio and shake their hands, then you're the reason I wrote this tonight, and this is for you. So until next time you hear from me, God Bless and Happy Texas Independence Day. Bum Phillips Former Head Coach Houston Oilers

Johnny Paycheck FINALLY Has A New Release
Saturday February 16th, 10:53PM CST updated

23 songs from an Artist who, because of various comercial & personal reasons, missed out on the "Outlaw Boom" in spite of being one of the only true outlaws in the bunch. Johnny Paycheck, he played in Ray Price's band, with Willie later replacing his bass position.
Johnny's rough attitude often left him in various fixes, but with one of the great commercial sucesses, "Take This Job and Shove It" brought acclaim and #1 in the charts, along with million in law suits. Heck yeah. Say it how you mean it.
A minor incident in a bar with a .22 and another patron, left Johnny in limbo for awhile.
From this came one of country music's greatest songs, "Old Violin": "Tonight I feel like an old violin, soon to be put away and never played again".
Hear a clip on his web site. Get this, if just for all our brothers who are locked up and miss the Hill Country sunsets each night.

South Austin Man Invents Wrench
Monday January 14th, 2:53PM CST updated

Austin American-Stateman's most eloquent writer and South Austin humorist, John Kelso, reports that "It's hard to say which end of the wrench Pat Bentley invented is really the business end."
"Bentley, an Austin mechanic and a former race-car driver, has come up with a stainless-steel tool called the Longneck Wrench. One end fits a 9/16th-inch nut and is meant for working on your truck. The other end is for opening beer bottles. So, at .95, this is the perfect gift for the person who wants to tune up his truck and himself at the same time."
"'It started out as kind of a lark, and kinda one of those things that you just have to do,' said Bentley, 59, who manages a flatbed and dump-truck repair shop for Henna Chevrolet on North Interstate 35. 'I hope it takes off and sells like Viagra.'"
"So far, Viagra is leading. About 1,000 to 1,500 Longneck Wrenches have been sold."
thanks again, Kelso.

West 37th Street Lights & Other Area Holiday Lights
Tuesday December 18th, 9:53PM CST updated

There have been Christmas-tree lights on West 37th Street since about 1980 now. The tradition was started by our grand poobah of lights, Jamie, who strung up about 14 strands of lights on his house one year. At the time, he thought that was a lot. Pretty soon, the guy across the street, Bob, was doing likewise. One year they ran a string of lights from one house to the next, and things snowballed from there.
For those new to the area, this is a must, BUT walk to really enjoy it.

Beatle George Harrison Dies
Friday November 30th, 5:19PM CST updated

"here comes the sun, here comes the sun, and i say it's all right.........."

George Harrison (1943 - 2001) died yesterday after suffering from cancer. George was the lead guitar player and a songwriter for the Beatles. He created one of the first large benefit concerts with "The Concert For Bangladesh" (East Pakistan) on August 1, 1971 with Leon Russell, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and many others. George brought country music to the ears of many young "rock 'n roller's" when he added "Matchbox" by Carl Perkins to the Beatles first album, which should open the doors wide to "Hillbilly Heaven" for him.

Farm Aid 2001
Saturday September 29th, 11:56PM CST updated

Farm Aid 2001 is just finishing up in Noblesville, Indiana with a great crowd initially estimated to be at least 20,000. Reports are that this year's benefits might be donated to September 11 victum's funds. We're sure that Willie will do the right thing and we support him.
Our own reporter has filed erratic and mostly unintelligible reports, thus we must assume that Willie & Family & Friends must have helped to lift the spirit of our Country, but then what did we expect.
We all should be proud of the American spirit and do like tonight, don't forget, but let's get to it and back to it.
Thanks Willie & all

Texas Trilogy - Steven Fromholz
Friday May 11th, 7:11PM CST updated

Texas Trilogy
is one of the best works ever written about life in rural Texas. It's been said that it's "Fromholz Fault". If you're not from Texas, please listen and see "Y".
"Six o'clock silence of a new day beginning, is heard in the small Texas town, like a signal from nowhere the people who live there are up and moving around, cause there's bacon to fry and there's bisquits to bake, on the stove the Salvation Army won't take, you open the windows and you turn on the fan, cause it's hotter than hell when the sun hits the land; Walter and Fanny well they own the grocery that sells most all that you need, they've been and up and workin' since early this morning, they've got the whole village to feed, they put out fresh eggs, through bad ones away, that rotted because of the heat yesterday, the store is all dark so you can't see the flies, that settle on round steak and last Monday's pies.............."

Now It's Poodie's Fault
Tuesday April 24th, 8:20PM CST

After Brian Burns' drive down from Dallas, he must have been just "Too Hot for Spicewood", (or is that Sisterdale?). Brian was to play "Poodie's Hilltop Bar & Grill" in Spicewood, not far from the Willie Nelson's enclave, but the locals closed 'em down. Unfortuneately Poodie was on the road with Willie, 'cause he's a big man with a kind and gentle heart (or else he'll kick your ass) and he'd certainly settled the problem. Poodie's has become one of "the" spots in the Hill Country, no telling who'll show up. Hopefully Brian will be back soon. See his link under "Texas Music/Artists".

Townes Unknown Facts,
and ashamed so!

Tuesday February 27th, 5:10PM CST updated

"A friend of mine told me that you once nearly joined The 13th Floor Elevators. Is that so?" Townes Van Zandt: "Well, I lived with Roky Erickson, who was the lead singer. He was like a brother of mine. He decided I should play bass. And I don't play bass. I told him, "Roky, I don't play bass." And he said, "You play guitar, you can play bass." So I went and bought a bass, and Tommy Hall and Danny the drummer came all the way from Houston down to Austin to meet the new bass player. (chuckles) We're drivin' to a Dunkin Donuts or somewhere and Tommy Hall says, "Townes, what kinda bass you play?" I said "I play a cherry Gibson," which I got the day before. And he said "No, I mean who do you play like?" I said, "I'm not sure." And he said "I mean what style do you play?" And I said "I dunno, I've never played the bass before." (laughs) And it was just like screech! "Roky!" And Roky's crazier than me, y'know. Screech! "Roky! I wanna talk to you!" And they dropped me off back at the commune and took Roky out and talked to him, and that's as close as I ever got to playing with The 13th Floor Elevators, heh, heh, heh."

WELCOME TO HONKY TONK TEXAS, USA
Tuesday February 20th, 6:22PM CST updated

Welcome to a comprehensive and inclusive web site centered around the Music of The Great State of Texas. Many years have been spent either enjoying being part of Honky Tonk Texas, USA or researching the topic. From The Jacksboro Highway in the late fifties, Johnny's B-29 just across the Red River, that long drive out to Lubbock (or down to Padre Island), the magic of the Hill Country with its blends of various cultures, those late nights spent in the border towns, West Texas is for true cowboy music, while the East Texas Pines seem to whisle with some strange sound seeping out of the Louisana swamps, and the blues quitly grew into its own element in several small clubs along Hall & Deep Elm Streets in Dallas and in Houston, this is Texas Music.
Texas is big, but what matters has always been the musical blend of the various cultures which have influenced us over our long and proud history
Honky Tonk Texas, USA and its companion CD-ROM, was created with all of this not only in mind but in heart. Jump in for the ride of your life, Texas Music!
The site is divided into several sections basically based on the Artists, the Dance Halls, the Austin Scene and Restaurants, Honky Tonk Texas, USA CD-Rom and a Gift Shop, where many of the releases of the Artists can be purchased (through a direct link to the Artist's location on Amazon.com).
Many folks have contributed their talents from around the world to this documentary of Texas Music, and everyone one is welcome to join in. Send us suggestions as to Artists or anything else which you feel would make the site more comprehensive or enjoyable. All are welcome. Artists are always encouraged to send us their web links and information. All of the Artists might not BE from Texas, but they all have contributed to Texas music or have been deeply influenced by it. We attempt to maintain some form of organization, but....the nature of the element we are working in forces us away from the keyboard and onto the dance floor, leaving some work somewhat hazy! So, help us out. Thanks and enjoy.

Farm Aid Update
Sunday January 7th, 1:05AM CST updated

Family Farmers Need Your Help Today! It's about your Food... On November 28 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), at the request of the giant biotech company Aventis, is holding a public hearing about whether to retroactively approve the genetically modified StarLink corn – the source of a nationwide recall of over 300 food products. Many of you may have heard about the scandal in the news. Maybe some of you have been concerned that you may have eaten the Starlink corn. Starlink was approved by the EPA for non-human consumption only, meaning it could be fed to farm animals, used for non-food oil or ethanol. It accidentally was mixed with conventional corn at grain elevators throughout the mid-west. We need you to email the EPA and register your concern about approving Starlink for human consumption now that it's gotten loose in our food chain, rather than doing the appropriate testing to be sure it's safe. When you email your letter please specify that you want your comments copied and distributed to the panel members that will be hearing testimony on the November 28th hearing on StarLink corn. Direct your comments to: Mr. Paul Lewis, and send them directly to him: Lewis.Paul@epa.gov Some points you may wish to address in your comments might include: 1) If the EPA approves StarLink retroactively, the regulatory system seems to be bowing to the demands and interests of the corporate giants of the biotech industry; 2) The discussion whether or not to approve StarLink should address all concerns and potential threats (i.e. environmental, ethical, economical, etc.) that biotechnology in agriculture poses; 3) Until an independent and comprehensive assessment of the social, environmental, health, and economic impacts of GM seeds and agricultural products on consumers and farmers, no approval by the EPA should be granted. FARM AID is concerned about the growing use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture. The push to get farmers to use GM seeds by the biotech industry goes hand in hand with the growing concentration of America's food system into fewer and fewer hands. ONE MORE THING: Please notify FARM AID if you sent a letter to the EPA by sending an email to mark@farmaid.org FARM AID is developing an Urgent Action Email Network to circulate alerts and updates related to family farms. Please let us know if you would like to be contacted on future alerts.

Saturday December 16th, 9:04PM CST

Farm Aid is pleased to offer our supporters a very special opportunity. You may purchase an Applewood Smoked Ham from Niman Ranch and have either (on the whole ham) or (on the half) of your purchase contributed to Farm Aid through December 27. This premium ham is from hogs raised by a select group of small family farmers in the midwest. Niman Ranch hogs are raised with care, outdoors on pasture or in bedded pens for warmth and protection; they are fed the finest all natural feed, never waste or animal by-products and are raised without the use of any antibiotics or hormones. The hams are smoked over applewood chips for about 11 hours for tender, sweet tasting flavor. To purchase your holiday ham just go to http://store.nimanranch.com to visit the Niman Ranch E-Market. Select the ham you wish to purchase and be sure to type FARMAID in the box titled Contribution Code in the checkout area. We regret that Niman Ranch cannot send hams outside the United States. - Farm Aid

On December 10, 2000, they will do something about it. On that day, at La Zona Rosa, Kinky Friedman and all Mary's friends, fans, students, family and well-wishers will present "Sweet Mary Aid," to help pay the high costs of her medical treatment. Willie says "Maybe So" to Dixie Chicks
Friday September 1st, 12:57PM CST updated

Upon pulling into Catskill, N.Y. lastnight for a show tonight at the local & infamous Friar Tuck Inn, a call from Willie and Family confirms the "Austin American Statesman's" story in this week's "XL.ent." concerning the guys "opening" for The Dixie Chicks on their current tour. Willie was "rehearsing" for his Aug. 15th interview on "A&E TV". They say it's 60 degrees and raining up north.

"Y - Echo Boom" Reports:
Sunday August 6th, 11:35PM CST updated

Warped Tour 2000: If you are a "punk rock or ska" fan and you did not catch Wared Tour, you missed a great show in San Antonio's Sunken Gardens. It was extremly hot, but so was the music with bands such as NoFx, One Man Army, Less than Jake, The Impossibles (local Austin Heroes), Anti Flag, Avail, and many others.
The gathering of punk fans and others began at 11:30 and rocked 'til 8 Staurday night. As expected with a Warped Tour you got plenty of free blow up balls, stickers, posters, and CDs. When the temperature rose and the crowd was suggested by a certain female punker to remove their clothing, many took advantage of this.
The facilities were not the best, but the music made it enjoyable. The barricades were set up at least 30 ft from the main stage, and it was a pretty small venue for such a large show. Hope you check out 101X Fest (see our Texas Music Link).

WILLIE'S PICNIC UPDATE:
Wednesday July 5th, 2:25AM CST updated

Whoa..... Susan Tedeschi & Johnny Lang along with Willie Nelson did a great but short blues set about 8pm. Willie has a new blues CD coming soon with these guys with shows already set in New York and other major markets soon. Ray Price came on at about 10pm doing a typically laid back, true country gentleman's set. Willie sat in for most of the set.
Freddie Powers showed his writing ability and what he and Merle did together (in the 1970's & 1980's) during his turn in the spotlight. Pat Green did a upbeat/honky tonkin' show that got the crowd really jumpin'. Pat's becoming an excellent local artist.
Joe Ely then joined Pat for "Me and Billy the Kid" and a couple more. Any show that Joe adds his talent to is a Texas favorite. Leon Russell continues to express the blend of old time rock 'n roll with country music to the thrill of all. It's always great to see Leon.
Little Joe y La Familia as usaual was great with his son taking a leading role with "Dad".
Texas sonwriters Bobby Boyd ("Two Of A kind, Workin' On A Full House": Garth Brooks) and Craig Dillingham along with Asleep At The Wheel, Billy Joe Shaver, Shelby Lynne, Doug Supernaw, Mr. Johnny Gimble, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Stephen Fromholz, Rusty "Black Hat" Weir, Fried Brothers, and many others made this a real "Home Town Picnic".

It's always great to have the spirit that Willie embraces music fans with at such a great and easily accessable location. As documentariers of the old Texas Hill Country Dance Halls, we feel the importance to preserve our heritage and not "over" commerciallize it. Thanks again to Willie, for being Willie....and to all the Direct Events folks who can pull a rabbit out of a hat if needed, obviously. ONLY IN TEXAS!!!!!

UPDATE: WILLIE'S PICNIC
Tuesday July 4th, 11:52PM CST

WILLIE'S July 4th 2000 ANNUAL PICNIC

Anothrer great year.....The law said 10:30pm, but Willie had to streach it to 11pm, just so he could play with his Family. He did do a great set with his Blue's Band earlier. Highlights included Freddie Powers, who wrote many of Merle Haggard's songs on his greatest albums. Willie also preformed with Ray Price and Leon Russell. We're on the way to the office through the traffic, so....look for updates soon.
After 28 shows in 30 days in Europe, a location change, and other complications, only Willie Nelson could have pulled this one off. It was great.

Benefit in Memory of Caesare Masse - June 11
Saturday June 10th, 3:13AM CST updated

On June 11th - High Noon - in Bandera, Texas (the Cowboy Capital of Texas), there will be a benefit for the Peterson Hospice (Kerrville, TX) in the name of Caesare Masse. The gathering will be held in Mansfield Park, on the road to Medina.

Bandera is the home of such Texas heros as Larry, "The Bandit" Nolen, Arkey Blue, Larry Mahan, Pee Wee from The Forge, Bruce and Charlie Robison, and many other Real Texans. If you've never been to Bandera, you ain't seen Texas. Two of Texas' best Honky Tonks are in town, Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar Saloon and The Bandera Caberet. Take this opportunity to help out some great folks and hear some real Texas music. No telling who will show up.

Larry Nolen, Junior Mitchan (from Bob Will's band), Buck & Shirley Sloan, Jeromy Stubbs (excellent guitarist), and The Geronimo Trevino Band have added their talents.

A great Texas event honoring some folks who cared for someone we all loved. With the spirit of Caesare around, I'd watch not only your wife or girlfriend, but your tequilia!
